2022 Brunia Pinot Noir, Sondagskloof, Walker Bay, South Africa

ABOUT THE WINE

Grown on Brunia’s remote estate in Sondagskloof, one of South Africa’s southernmost and coolest winegrowing zones, the 2023 Pinot Noir is a true expression of maritime terroir. The site’s shale-derived soils and constant coastal winds produce small, thick-skinned berries with vibrant acidity and fine structure. The nose is lifted and delicate—red cherry, cranberry, crushed rose petals, and hints of wet earth—while the palate is pure and precise, with subtle oak framing and an iron-rich undertone.

The grapes were hand-harvested and 30% whole-bunch fermented with wild yeasts in open-top fermenters, preserving aromatic complexity and tannic freshness. The wine matured for 10 months in older French oak barrels (228L and 300L), allowing for gentle oxygenation without overt wood influence. No fining, minimal sulfur, and light filtration at bottling ensure that the wine remains a transparent conduit for its terroir.

The 2023 vintage was marked by a long, even ripening season with cooler-than-average nights, contributing to the wine’s lively acidity and refined structure. Serve lightly chilled with duck breast, mushroom risotto, or grilled trout.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Brunia Wines is a small, family-run estate located in Sondagskloof, a remote subregion of Walker Bay that is fast becoming one of South Africa’s most exciting cool-climate frontiers. Owned by the Smit family and farmed with deep environmental sensitivity, Brunia takes its name from the indigenous fynbos plant species endemic to the Cape’s mountain regions—a nod to the farm’s commitment to biodiversity and ecological balance.

The vineyards are planted in shale-rich soils at elevation, just 20 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. The constant sea breezes and cool temperatures slow ripening, preserve acidity, and lend the wines a distinct saline-mineral edge. Farming is organic-in-practice with a strong focus on soil regeneration and preserving the surrounding fynbos ecosystem.

At Brunia, the winemaking philosophy is one of restraint and respect: minimal intervention, native fermentations, neutral vessels, and a light touch in the cellar. The result is a range of wines that are quietly expressive, deeply rooted in place, and unapologetically elegant—none more so than their finely wrought Pinot Noir.
